Making the EU-healthcare.fi website more user-oriented

7.8.2024

In the spring of 2024, a lot went on behind the curtains of the EU-healthcare.fi website. The site publication tool was updated to a newer version, which opened the doors for broader development.

In late 2023, the contact point for cross-border health care examined the quality and technical up-to-dateness of the site with its partner. As a result of the work, it was concluded that it would be necessary to replace the site publication tool with a newer version. The change was important because the technical support and updates for the old tool will be discontinued in the near future.

“It is important for us to keep up with the times in terms of technical solutions, too. On the technical side of things, versions and systems may become obsolete very quickly, which is why it is sometimes necessary to examine whether or not the solutions being used are up to date,” says Online Communications Specialist Silja Aunola.

As such, the contact point took it upon itself to update the publication tool. The update also kicked off more extensive development work aimed at making the site more usable for both the contact point employees who update the site and the users who visit it.

The new tool provided the website with features that make it easier to edit the content of the site and update the text structure.

“The update of the publication tool makes it easier for us to group information and edit text structure in the content production process of the publication system, which also makes it faster to update changing information on the site,” Aunola says.

Methods of presenting content in the context of the change

The new publication tool provides the EU-healthcare.fi website with sections that enable the contact point to present information in a more clarified and visual manner. In practice, users will initially notice the drop-down menus, which can be opened with a click, used to group information and view topics covered on the site more effectively.

“We will also be adding other methods of presenting information visually at a later time,” Aunola says cheerfully.

The development group has discussed at least lists, visualised paths and info boxes.

“As the new publication tool provides us with entirely new opportunities to present content, we will take on the section-by-section process of making the site content easier to view and understand,” Aunola says.

The contact point also plans to organise user tests to gain information on which site changes work and which still require some fine-tuning.

“We are continuously making our content more understandable and easier to find, but there is still plenty of work to be done. We also hope for user feedback to ensure that the web pages serve the users as well as possible,” Aunola says.
